Have you ever had flooding in your basement? Besides the damage that it can do to your belongings stored down there, it could also lead to water damage and mold growth. If your home is located in a low lying area, or in wet surroundings, you most likely will need a sump pump to keep the water out of your basement.

A sump pump sits in a trench underneath your home and will pump out water when the water level starts rising below your home. It is a fairly simple setup with a floater in the trench that will turn on the sump pump as it rises. The water is then deposited away from the home. If your sump pump hasn’t been used in a while, you should test it out to make sure it functions properly. Do this especially if you know there is a rainstorm on the way. Pouring water into the trench and checking that the sump pump turns on is an easy way to do this. Carefully dislodge the floater if it is stuck, otherwise the sump pump won’t turn on.
