To save space in homes, many different methods have been utilized. One that stuck, is that of a pull down ladder for attic access. This frees up space that would otherwise be used for a staircase leading up into the attic. While most of us don’t spend that much time going up in the attic, there are some things to consider when you do use one of these devices.

If your pull-down ladder isn’t installed properly, there could be a risk of injury. First, the ladder needs to be properly attached to the beams in your ceiling. There have been cases of the entire ladder ripping out of an opening where it wasn’t secured.

Another problem is if your ladder is too long. Since there usually are joints where the ladder folds or extends, with a ladder that is too long, more stress will be put on these joints than what is safe.

If you are moving heavy items into your attic, have someone hand them to you instead of carrying them up the ladder, since this will be safer.
