How prepared are you for a disaster? If your answer is: “Not very well” or “I don’t know”, then you should take some time to consider what you can do to prepare. Disasters are becoming more and more common with the changing climate, and many times things like tornadoes and wildfires start in areas where they haven’t happened before.

If you have very little warning, your first concern should be the safety of you and your family, and either evacuate or find shelter. If you have advance warning, however, you might have time to prepare your home to minimize the chance of property damage. This involves shutting off 3 main utilities – power, water and gas. These hold the potential of turning minor damage into a major disaster for your home, especially when combined, so if you have the time, shutting them off at the main valve might make the difference between returning home to an empty shell of your former home or a place where you could resume your life.
