Many people do not like bats, but bats play a significant role in the ecosystem. Bats eat a lot of mosquitoes and they play a role in pollination and seed dispersal. So if you’re interested in installing a bat house so that you can invite more bats into your yard, here are a few things to keep in mind.
When installing your bat house, make sure it’s in a location that gets at least six hours of sunlight. Also, place your bat house in a location where there is a water source within a quarter of a mile. You can purchase your bat house or make one yourself. There are free bat house plans available online. Your bat house should be at least 24 inches high and 16 inches wide. It should also be free of mesh and fabric. Install your bat house onto a building or another large wooden or concrete structure. Bats prefer these locations because these locations offer more consistent temperatures. Bats do not like bat houses that are installed in trees because these locations tend to be too shaded and have a high risk of predation.
These are just a few things to keep in mind when installing your bat house, and hopefully inviting more bats into your yard.
