Do you know what an HOA is? HOA stands for Homeowners Association, and its stated purpose is to improve the neighborhood. The problem is that around the country, some homeowner associations have taken their power beyond the intended purpose. In some states it is even possible that the HOA has the power to do non-judicial foreclosures of homes of members that aren’t keeping up with their due payments. While this is the worst case scenario, an HOA that is overbearing can be very annoying for a homeowner. So if you are about to move into a neighborhood where there is an HOA, you should first do some research. If there is a history of foreclosures in the neighborhood, you should discreetly ask around to find out how people in the neighborhood view the HOA. It could be that they will have a say on any work that you do around your home, and some rules might seem to encroach on your rights.
